OMG: See how Liverpool fans react as Costa kicks Ramos in the head

Diego Costa versus Sergio Ramos was always going to be a ferocious matchup and their battle in the Super Cup certainly did not disappoint. Atletico Madrid triumphed over bitter rivals Real Madrid with a 4-2 win and Costa put in an impressive performance in Tallinn, finding the net in the 1st and 79th minutes before the match headed into extra time.

Goals from Saul Niguez and Koke secured the victory for Atleti but it was all about the bruising encounter between perennial pantomime villains Costa and Ramos at the Lillekula Stadium.

Costa got one over on Ramos after only 50 seconds, heading past his international team-mate before smashing the ball past Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas. The former Chelsea man was on top both physically and mentally but produced a naughty moment in the 20th minute as he kicked Ramos in the back of the head.

Costa professed his innocence, claiming that the contact was an accident, before trying to take on half of Madrid’s team. Ramos, no shrinking violet himself, infuriated Liverpool fans in last season’s Champions League final by injuring their talisman Mohamed Salah. Salah, who suffered a dislocated shoulder after being hauled to the ground, left the field in tears at the Olympic Stadium in Ukraine and was forced to miss the start of the World Cup.

Costa claimed that he shares a ‘big friendship’ with Ramos despite their altercation on the pitch. ‘Everyone knows I admire Ramos. He is a really great player and he has shown year after year how good he is,’ Costa said after Atleti’s win. ‘We have a big friendship even though you could not see it today. He helped me a lot at the beginning when I was in the national team.

‘So I respect him but we both know that on the pitch we must fight for our team. He’s a strong player always looking for the win, as do I. ‘Whatever happens on the pitch, after the final whistle we shake hands and that’s the end of the story.’
