Most Seen: Jorginho's passing record against Newcastle goes viral
The passing statistics
surrounding Chelsea’s hard-fought victory over Newcastle United this afternoon
have been garnering widespread attention online.
Newcastle 1-2 Chelsea
The two sides went
head to head at St. James’ Park in a 4pm kick-off, with hosts Newcastle having
come into the clash with just a solitary point to show for their opening two
Premier League outings of the campaign.
Chelsea, meanwhile,
had gotten off to a flying start to life under Maurizio Sarri, having picked up
wins over Huddersfield and Arsenal over the last two weeks.
And today’s 90 minutes
on Tyneside painted a picture of two sides on very different trajectories, with
Chelsea having absolutely dominated proceedings en route to a 2-1 win.
Eden Hazard finally
put the Blues in front with 15 minutes remaining in the clash, after Marcos
Alonso was adjudged to have been fouled by Fabian Schar in the Newcastle box.
However, Newcastle
grabbed a completely-undeserved equalizer 7 minutes later, when a blatant elbow
from DeAndre Yedlin on Olivier Giroud was somehow not spotted, allowing the
former to whip a cross onto the head of Joselu for a superb finish.
Karma soon told,
though, when Marcos Alonso’s drilled volley across the box was diverted home at
the back post by the unfortunate Yedlin.
Chelsea the pass masters
In the end, the
one-goal difference between the sides did little to portray the true pattern of
this afternoon’s clash, with Newcastle having basically spent the 90 minute
camped inside their own half.
Though Chelsea didn’t
create a huge amount in terms of clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities, the
Blues’ possession advantage over their hosts was an absolute sight to behold.
And it is the
statistics surrounding the possession football on show from Maurizio Sarri’s
men (and Jorginho in particular) versus Newcastle which have gone viral this
evening,
