Most Seen: See why Sanchez tried to take Penalty from Pogba during Leicester Match
Alexis Sanchez tried to convince Paul Pogba to give him penalty-taking duties
after Manchester United were awarded an early spot-kick against Leicester City
on Friday night.
The Red Devils got the new
Premier League season off to a bang within three minutes, with Pogba calmly
dispatching a penalty after Daniel Amartey had handled the ball inside the box
following a shot from Sanchez. The Chilean clearly wanted to take the resulting
penalty, but Pogba claimed the ball and argued his case – and fortunately
buried his effort.
Speaking during commentary for Sky
Sports, Jamie Carragher said of the incident: ‘That’s Sanchez. He wants it!
They both want to get off the mark. ‘But the World Cup winner is having none of
it. “I’m the captain. My ball”. 1-0. Great penalty.’
During half-time, Gary Neville expanded further, adding: ‘It always makes me wonder when these chats happen because obviously all the analysis that the coaches do pre-match. ‘They put all the set-pieces on the boards, the penalty takers, the free-kick takers, but there is definitely a debate there about who is going to take it.
‘I know that Paul Pogba handed one to
Alexis Sanchez last season but he wasn’t going to give this one away and when
he started – I don’t know what he was doing actually – just moving up towards
the ball you thought, “oh no, start running quickly because you’re not going to
get the power in it!” But he’s so confident and he started the game
brilliantly. Asked about the strange run up, he added: ‘Weird.
I was thinking you’ve got to score. I
was thinking how do you get the power into it. But he just lifts it over Kasper
Schmeichel and when you do that in the upper part of the net keepers never get
them.’
