YES: De Gea equals PL record with masterclass goalkeeping against Arsenal
David de Gea equals Premier League record with goalkeeping masterclass against Arsenal
David
De Gea equalled the Premier League record for most saves made in a single match
as his heroics earned Manchester United victory over Arsenal on Saturday.
Although
the Red Devils emerged as 3-1 victors at the Emirates Stadium, they were under
a huge amount of pressure throughout the contest and were totally reliant on De
Gea.
Incredibly,
according to Opta, he made 14 saves in the match – the joint most by any
goalkeeper since they started recording statistics at the start of the 2003/04
season.
He now shares the record with Tim Krul, who made 14 saves against Tottenham in November 2013, and former Gunners goalkeeper Vito Mannone, who made as many against Chelsea in April 2014.
United went ahead early on at the Emirates
through Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard, with the latter scoring again in
the second half to seal the win.
But it was the performance of their goalkeeper that really stole the show; incredibly, Arsenal had 33 shots against United as they laid siege to De Gea’s goal.
But he proved equal to almost
everything that came his way – save for Alexandre Lacazette’s finish at the
start of the second half.
The
highlight of De Gea’s performance was undoubtedly a superb double save that
would have levelled the match. First Lacazette sent a low, rasping drive
towards the near post that De Gea did unbelievably well to claw out, and then
he somehow managed to get up again to block Alexis Sanchez’s follow up shot
with his feet.
