Most Read: Conte set to restore Luiz to full training
David Luiz’s Chelsea exile will not last much longer, with Antonio Conte set to
restore him to first-team training just days after leaving him out of the
matchday squad to face Manchester United. The Brazilian was a shock omission
from the team that won 1-0 on Sunday, with Andreas Christensen taking his place
in the starting XI and Ethan Ampadu his place in the squad. Conte cited
‘tactical reasons’ for leaving Luiz out, though there have been reports of the
two falling out following Chelsea’s disastrous defensive showing against Roma
in the Champions League.
But The Guardian report that Conte will permit Luiz to return to full training with the rest of the first team squad who are not involved in internationals on Wednesday afternoon. The report also claims that he was dropped due to a combination of having questioned Conte’s tactics as well as a perceived loss of form.
However, Luiz will have to prove he warrants inclusion in Chelsea’s next match, an away trip to West Brom in the Premier League, and has a lot of work to do to get back in his manager’s good books. Luiz was believed to have been given a couple of days off but will be back at Cobham for training on Wednesday, having once again been left out of the Brazil squad.
Conte said after the United victory that he had simply been promoting the club’s often overlooked youth in picking Ampadu over Luiz, though then hinted at friction with the defender. Asked if Luiz still had a future at the club, he replied: ‘I don’t know. He has to work really hard otherwise he is on the bench or in the stands.’
