Who is Man City's best play so far this season?
Manchester City have made a flying start to the new Premier League season.
Pep Guardiola has
guided his team to the top of the table along side Manchester United.
With the bulk of his squad
on international duty, we assess the high points of the campaign so far.
Here are the view of
our writers.
Stuart Brennan
Best player: Plenty
of candidates, and a tough choice, but the way Leroy Sane has burst into life
has been absolutely thrilling. His goals have all been of high quality, in one
respect or another, and he has been terrorising defences. And when required to
make a sacrifice at Chelsea in a clever Pep tactical ploy, he did it without
any ego.
Sane celebrates at West Brom.
Best goal: Strangely,
given the fact that Pep Guardiola rested his front-line players, the opening
goal at West Brom in the League Cup was my pick. An amazing 52 passes from the
kick off, with all 11 players touching the ball, before Leroy Sane's finish.
Quintessential Pep Guardiola football.
Best moment: Guardiola
refuses to acknowledge that he has improved Sergio Aguero … but he has. And the
fact he is now more than a goalscorer, and that City are a true team, was
symbolised when he was through on the keeper but rather than following his
striker's instinct he squared the ball for Gabriel Jesus to tap into the empty
net.
James Robson
Best player: As
Kevin de Bruyne lined up his shot against Chelsea, it was a case of waiting for
the net to bulge. But it was a moment when City’s dominance at the home of the
champions was confirmed - sending out a warning to their rivals. In a season
when they have hammered one team after another, it was a 1-0 win that will have
shaken every other title pretender to the core. They are the real deal.
Best goal: There
have been a lot of goals and a lot of candidates - but quite apart from the
technical brilliance of Leroy Sane’s finish against West Brom in the Carabao
Cup tie - the speed of City’s break - it was the timing of the strike. West
Brom had Guardiola’s men under the cosh and looked like taking the lead
themselves. Seconds later they were down and out.
Sergio Aguero is on the brink of a club record.
Best moment: It
still feels like Sergio Aguero he’s under-appreciated - and in a season when
Kane, Lukaku and Morata are banging the goals in, he’s still not guaranteed a
place in the PFA team of the year.
But on the brink of
becoming City’s all-time record goal-scorer, he stands up there with the very
best the Premier League has seen. If anything, Guardiola has got him playing
better than ever.
Simon Bajkowski
Best player: Many
have stepped up a gear this season but the difference is most clear in goal.
Ederson, a 24-year-old from the Portuguese league with no international caps
has shown himself a better fit for City than the best England and Spain can
offer - and he could not have been more nonchalant about it. Oozing confidence
from the back, Ederson more than anyone has helped to transform the feeling
around the team.
De Bruyne celebrates his strike against Chelsea.
Best goal: Kevin
De Bruyne's against Chelsea. The goal itself is a mix of pace, power and
precision, with Nicolas Otamendi bringing the ball out of defence and passing
beyond a line of four Chelsea players. From there, it takes less than four
seconds for De Bruyne to touch the ball to Jesus, burst beyond three players as
he received it back and then nearly burst the net as it rocketed past Courtois.
A thing of beauty, and it meant an awful lot for the team.
Best moment: Sterling's
penalty against Watford summed up everything great about the team at the
minute. The flowing move showcased the fluency of the team in attack; Aguero -
chasing Eric Brook's record - was happy to give up the responsibility;
Sterling, who needs to up his goal rate, was determined to step up and smash it
in; and the very fact that the team were still attacking at 5-0 in the 90th
minute revealed just why they have set the early pace.
Best player: Kevin
de Bruyne - The German has been instrumental for City already this season not
just with his goals but his ability to control the game and be at the heart of
everything City do. His play makes City tick and he's showed he's not just a
player to hold the ball in the middle but he's been pivotal in City's attack.
If he continues in this form he's surely nailed on for player of the season.
