OMG: Liverpool Matip react to good save by De Gea
Mute
Liverpool defender Joel Matip insists he should have put away
his glorious chance against Manchester United on Saturday, but
admits David de Gea 'saved it really
brilliantly'.
The Cameroon
international had the best chance of the game shortly after the half-hour mark
after Roberto Firmino found him in space with a dangerous cutback.
Matip had the goal at
his mercy from six yards out but, somehow, de Gea kept out his shot with a
scarcely believable stop with his left foot.
And, reflecting on
that miss post-match, Matip could not help but pay tribute to the Spaniard
following the 0-0 draw at Anfield.
"I have to score,
but he saved it really brilliantly," he said.
"Opportunities
like this we have to use and it was a little bit unlucky and frustrating."
De Gea's latest
heroics come just a month after he made an incredible stop with his hand
against Stoke to deny compatriot Jese Rodriguez from point-blank range, when
the game was similarly tense.
But the 26-year-old
insists there was no science behind his latest stop.
“Everything happened so quickly. I put my foot out as quickly as
possible and saved the ball, so I’m happy for that," he told MUTV.
De Gea has now kept
seven clean sheets in eight league games this season - which is United's best
ever clean sheet record for the start of a Premier League season.
