OMG: Lukaku Misses training Again-but Belgium still want him to play
Jose Mourinho is keeping a close eye
on Belgium’s treatment of Romelu Lukaku as Manchester United's leading scorer
continues his recovery from an ankle injury.
Scans on Monday cleared the
24-year-old of any breaks or ligament damage - but he is still to train with
his international teammates ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against
Bosnia and Cyprus.
Belgium coach Roberto Martinez is refusing to rule Lukaku out
after national team doctors placed him on an individual training program.
But Mourinho has ensured United’s own medical staff have
remained in close contact with the situation after admitting Lukaku is
virtually irreplaceable until Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns from injury.
Martinez insists he will wait until Friday to make a final
decision on Lukaku’s involvement against Bosnia the following day.
But Mourinho will not want any risks to be taken with his
striker - particularly ahead of United’s Premier League clash with Liverpool
after the international break.
Lukaku was absent from training again on Wednesday and Martinez
said: “We have to be patient.
“We are in touch with United’s medical staff.
“We’ll take a decision on Friday.”
Lukaku has scored 11 goals in 10 games in what has been a
stunning start to his United career.
And Mourinho stressed the £75m man’s importance to his title
challenge, saying: “Look, without Zlatan, we cannot rotate the striker,
especially because Marcus Rashford is playing also in other positions.
“So until the moment we have Zlatan we cannot think about giving
rest to our No9, the same way we give in other positions. We cannot do that.
“Belgium is Roberto’s responsibility and it’s his decision to
play him or not to play him. I cannot, professionally speaking, say, ‘Do this
or do that’.”
